Android Scenes Widget

Android Scenes Widget

General overview

Alarm.com's Android users were asking for a way to control their devices quickly without having to open the app.  In 2015, Alarm.com launched the Scenes feature – a way for users to control many devices with just one click.  Want to disarm your panel, unlock your front door, turn on your lights, and set your thermostat with a touch of just one button?  There's a Scene for that. Exposing Scenes on the Android user's home screen really maximized this feature's practicality.

Goals

  1. Make the scenes feature a true one-tap experience by creating a widget.

  2. Allow for widget resizing.

Process

  1. Conduct competitive analysis on widget design and placement UX.

  2. Create high-fidelity mockups using sketch and sharing to Marvel.

  3. Work in tandem with software developers to create animation.

SCENES WIDGET

The Alarm.com Android Widget's form was inspired by the Amazon Dash button – another single tap experience. If the user would like to confirm the success of a Scene launch, they will need to open the app.

SCENE SELECTION

When placing the widget, the user has the ability to choose from any already configured scene. They can even place the same scene multiple times should they want to.

RESIZING

The Android scenes widget is 1x1 when it is first placed. However, it can be extended to a 1x5 widget. The larger format allows the name of the scene to appear. The smaller format is an icon only.

CANCEL COMMAND

Should the user fat-thumb a scene accidentally, they have 3 seconds to cancel the command.
